8 inch disks- The first generation of floppy disk - still in use on some specialist machines.

Used for:

  • Code Driven Typesetting Systems. Examples: Alphatype; AM Compset; Berthold; Compugrahic; Linotype; Scantext.
  • Mini Computers and Small Mainframes. Examples: Unix; DEC; IBM; ICL.
  • Standalone and Word Processors. Examples: AES; DECmate; Diamond; Hewlett Packard; Olivetti; Tandy; Texas Instruments; Triumph Adler; Wang; Xerox.
  • Various types of disk - single sided, double sided, single and double density, hard and soft sectored. Various operating systems.
